What Do You Know About CNC Plastic ?

Plastic machining is a controlled process of cutting a piece of raw material and creating a desired final shape and size is known as machining.  Plastic machining uses milling machines, lathes, drill presses and various other machines to manufacture shapes in a wide variety of plastics. Through the process of removing plastic material, the CNC machine cut the desired shape, size, and surface finish to meet the specifications of product designs and engineering drawings.
Our CNC plastic capabilities include prototyping and low-volume custom machining, with particular expertise in CNC ABS machining, CNC POM machining as well as other plastics such as PA,PTFE,HDPE,PEEK and a variety of secondary operations and surface treatments.

Advantage of CNC Processing Plastic Parts

CNC machining ensures the accuracy of the product
CNC machining of plastic parts offers a precision not available in injection molding or 3D printing. Machined plastic parts also don't have the seams of 3D printer layering and injection molding parting lines, which can change the appearance of the final part.
CNC does not need molds to process plastic parts
We do not need moulds for plastic processing during prototyping or small batch production. Unlike other methods, this process allows designers to create parts without a mold. The process is controlled by computer and requires only a CAD file with the design.
CNC processing plastic parts have strong adaptability
Parts can be fabricated directly from plastic sheets or rods, so the engineering team can easily modify the design during the production phase without making any new tools and upgrading low-cost parts.
With faster turnaround time
CNC machines are controlled by computers and can operate 24/7 to achieve optimal efficiency, quality and process control throughout the entire production process from programming to machining to finishing.
A wider range of material applications
Various engineering grade plastics are commonly used as structural materials for machined parts and products because of their excellent properties, including excellent strength-to-weight ratio, excellent insulation properties, higher corrosion resistance, chemical and wear resistance, ability to withstand high temperatures, and so on.

Skills For cNC plastic Parts

Part setup
Keep in mind when setting up the CNC plastic block.  Plastic is not metal.  If too much force is applied to the blank, it is easy to leave a large mark on the surface.  In fact, if you apply too much force, the parts can break.
cutting tools
Tool Choosing the best cutting tool for plastic parts can be a complex job.  The reason is that the composition of plastics and composites varies widely.  Some plastics are fortified with hard carbide particles or contain additives that improve flexibility, heat resistance or some other parameter.  All of this changes the way plastics respond to processing.  Therefore, according to the characteristics of different plastics, suitable cutting tools should be selected for processing plastic parts.
Cutting technology
Let's take CNC milling of plastic casing as an example to look at the choice of plastic cutting process.  The main problems you must be aware of are excessive friction and plastic deformation of parts.  To avoid these problems, keep the tool sharp at all times during cutting.  If the material you are using is not strong enough, freeze it.  However, you should be careful because plastic can harden and become brittle at low temperatures.
Cutting parameter
To prevent chips from melting into CNC machined plastic parts, you need to keep the tool moving and prevent it from staying in one place for too long.  Get the chip out as fast as you can.  Therefore, CNC machining plastic parts must be large, even corrosive feed.  And with the increase of the feed rate parameter, the spindle speed must be fast.  Approximate estimates are about 3 times the aluminum feed rate, and the corresponding cutting speed.

CNC machining common plastic materials overview

Nylon, also known as polyamide (PA), is a thermoplastic often used in engineering applications because of its excellent mechanical properties, good impact strength, and high chemical and wear resistance. But it absorbs water and moisture easily.
Nylon 6 and nylon 66 are the most commonly used brands in CNC machining.
Typical density: 1.14g /cm3.
polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic with high toughness, good machinability and excellent impact strength (superior to ABS). It can be colored, but is usually optically clear, making it ideal for a wide range of applications, including fluid installations or automotive glass.
Typical density: 1.20-1.22g /cm3
POM
POM, often known by the trade name Delrin, is the most mechanically capable engineered thermoplastic among plastics.
POM (Delrin) is usually the best choice for CNC machining plastic parts requiring high precision, high stiffness, low friction, excellent dimensional stability at high temperature and extremely low water absorption.
Typical density: 1.40-1.42 g/cm3
PTFE
Commonly known as Teflon, PTFE is an engineered thermoplastic with excellent chemical and heat resistance and the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) is one of the few plastics that can withstand operating temperatures above 200℃, making it an excellent electrical insulator. However, it has purely mechanical properties and is commonly used as a lining or insert in components.
Typical density: 2.2g /cm3
HDPE
High density polyethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic that has a high strength-to-weight ratio, high impact strength, and good weather resistance.
HDPE is a lightweight thermoplastic suitable for outdoor use and plumbing. Like ABS, it is commonly used to create prototypes prior to injection molding.
Typical density: 0.93-0.97g /cm 3
PEEK is a high performance engineered thermoplastic with excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability over a very wide temperature range, and excellent tolerance to most chemicals.
PEEK is often used in place of metal parts because of its high strength-to-weight ratio. Medical grades are also available, making PEEK suitable for biomedical applications as well.
Typical density: 1.32g /cm 3
